Description

William and Lewis A Wallace, 1819-23. 3-storey and basement, 3-bay tenement in terraced site. Polished sandstone ashlar; polished V-jointed rustication at principal floor; broached ashlar at basement. (Former) cill course at 1st floor, cill course at 2nd floor; band course at principal and 1st floor; cornice and blocking course at 2nd floor. Ashlar steps and entrance platts oversailing basement.

E (PRINCIPAL) ELEVATION: round-arched doorpiece in bay to left, comprising flush-panelled door with radial fanlight. Windows in bays to right; regular fenestration to floors above, with cills lowered at 1st floor; decorative cast-iron balcony spanning bays at 1st floor. Flagged basement area, with coped rubble retaining wall; vertically boarded timber doors to cellars.

12-pane timber sash and case windows at principal and 2nd floors, 15-pane timber sash and case windows to 1st floor; cills lowered at 1st floor. Grey slate M-roof. Cast-iron rainwater goods.

INTERIOR: not seen 1997.

RAILINGS AND LAMP: ashlar copes surmounted by cast-iron railings with spear-headed balusters and urn finials. Cast-iron railing-mounted lamp with glass globe.

Statement of Interest

Part of the Second New Town A Group, a significant surviving part of one of the most important and best preserved examples of urban planning in Britain.
