Description

Circa 1850. 3-storey over basement, 9-bay symmetrical classical tenement block. Droved cream sandstone ashlar at basement; polished sandstone ashlar above. Base course; band course between principal and 1st floors; cill course to 2nd floor; eaves cornice and blocking course. Ashlar steps and entrance platts oversailing basement.

S (PRINCIPAL) ELEVATION: bays grouped 4-1-4. Modern part-glazed doors with 3-pane rectangular fanlights at basement in bays to centre and 3rd from left and right; timber panelled door with marginal glazed rectangular fanlight to corresponding bays at ground floor; regular fenestration to remainder.

E ELEVATION: coursed rubble with polished sandstone ashlar quoins.

W ELEVATION: obscured by adjoining building.

N ELEVATION: not seen 2000.

12-pane timber sash and case windows. Grey slate piended roof with lead ridge. Central paired, coped, brick stacks. Cast-iron rainwater goods.

RAILINGS: spear-headed iron railings to street, plain railings to entrance platts.

Statement of Interest

Survives virtually unaltered as an example of an Edinburgh tenement in the classical style. One of the earliest parts of Morrison Street to be completed.
