Robert Reid and William Sibbald, 1812. 4-storey and basement, 7-bay terraced tenement. Broached ashlar sandstone,; V-jointed rustication at principal floor. band course at principal and 1st floor; projecting cills to 1st and 2nd floor windows; continual cornice at 2nd floor; cornice and blocking course at 3rd floor. Ashlar steps and entrance platts oversailing basement.
E (PRINCIPAL) ELEVATION: 6-panel timber common stair door with umbrella semicircular fanlight, centred at principal floor, flanked by pair of 6-panel timber doors with umbrella semicircular fanlights. Windows in remaining bays at principal floor; regular fenestration to floors above, and to basement. Flagged basement area.
N ELEVATION: adjoining terrace, see separate listing (11-15 Drummond Place).
S ELEVATION: adjoining terrace, see separate listing (1 Northumberland Street).
Predominantly 12-pane timber sash and case windows. Grey slate M-roof. Cast-iron rainwater goods. Broached ashlar ridge and shouldered gablehead stacks; coped, with circular cans.
INTERIORS: not seen, 1997, but some evidence of working panelled shutters.
RAILINGS AND LAMPS: ashlar copes surmounted by iron railings with spear-headed balusters and pineapple finials. Cast-iron railing-mounted lamps with glass globes.
Part of the Second New Town A Group, a significant surviving part of one of the most important and best preserved examples of urban planning in Britain.
Nelson Street was part of the first extension of the New Town planned by Reid and Sibbald in 1802. Building began in 1812.
