Robert Reid and William Sibbald, early 19th century. 3-storey and basement, 5-bay terraced tenement. Broached ashlar sandstone; V-jointed rustication at principal floor. Base course; band courses between basement and principal floor, principal and 1st floors; cill courses at 1st and 2nd floors; cornice and blocking course at 2nd floor. Ashlar steps and entrance platts oversailing basement.
N (PRINCIPAL) ELEVATION: round-arched doorpiece centred at principal floor, comprising 9-panelled timber door with glazed upper panels, radial semicircular fanlight. Regular fenestration in remaining bays at principal floor, and to floors above and basement.
E ELEVATION: blank coursed rubble gable; 3-storey 2-bay addition to left, with regular fenestration at all floors; later rendered addition adjoining at S.
W ELEVATION: adjoining terrace, see separate listing (19 and 19B Howe Street).
12-pane timber sash and case windows. Grey slate M-roof. Cast-iron rainwater goods. Rendered gablehead stack; coped, with circular cans.
INTERIORS: not seen, 1997, but some evidence of working panelled shutters.
RAILINGS AND LAMP: ashlar copes surmounted by cast-iron railings with balusters and finals. Cast-iron railing-mounted lamp with glass globe.
Part of the Second New Town A Group, a significant surviving part of one of the most important and best preserved examples of urban planning in Britain. The design of 70 Northumberland Street is continuous with 19 and 19B Howe Street and 72-76 Northumberland Street.
