Description

Peddie and Kinnear, 1866; sculpture by John Rhind; ground floor and mezzanine by T Waller Marwick, 1964; rebuilt retaining facades by J & F Johnston, 1991. 4-storey and mezzanine, 5-bay facade of palazzo style former club. Polished cream sandstone ashlar (stonecleaned). Ground floor built over basement area, with Roman Doric columns and pilasters, entablature and balustrade; mezzanine set back with bowed 5-light window at centre; Greek key frieze and cornice. At 1st floor, 5-light bow continued at centre with Corinthian columns on pedestals, richly carved frieze and dentilled cornice with acroteria; flanked by single windows with bracketed cill course, architraves and consoled pediments. Carved cill course to 2nd and 3rd floors. Architraved windows; with consoled cornices to 2nd floor, between moulded panels at 3rd floor. Coved eaves with lions? head coronas.

Timber sash and case 4-pane windows (curved to bow). Corniced ashlar stacks (partly rebuilt); piended roof.

INTERIOR: Gutted and refitted with extra floor for Waterstone?s Bookshop.
