Description

Cousin, Ormiston and Taylor (H Ramsay Taylor), 1900. Florid fin-de-siecle Renaissance office block with shop at ground. 5-storey and attic narrow frontage with canted ogee-roofed oriel at corner. Polished cream sandstone ashlar with with polished red granite facing at ground, on grey base course. Arcaded at ground; bracketed giant fluted Ionic pilasters to 1st and 2nd floors, mullion and transomed windows to 1st floor, arcaded windows to 2nd floor; 3rd floor with standard pilasters and balustraded balconies to arched windows; modillioned cornice; arcaded 4th storey.

E (SOUTH ST ANDREWS STREET) ELEVATION: 3-bay, outer bays broader/bipartite. At ground, 2-leaf panelled doors to upper floors to right, door to shop at corner. Centre bay with broken pediment and pedimented date stone; pair of pedimented bipartite dormers.

S ELEVATION: right bay as above; 4 plain bays to left with wallhead stacks.

Timber plate glass casement windows. Piended roof, grey slates; ashlar stacks. Lead ogee roof to corner tower with finial.

INTERIOR: adapted but largely intact. Some cornices and doorpieces survive, and compartmented ceilings. Stair with cast-iron banisters.
