Description

T Waller Marwick, 1964-68; replica (externally) of previous early 18th century building on site. 5-storey and attic tenement with 2 2-window gabled wallhead dormers; shops at ground floor. Harled; stone margins; squared rubble with ashlar margins to ground. Corniced ground floor. Regular fenestration above. 2 crowstepped gables to rear and engaged octagonal stair tower with facetted roof.

12 pane glazing in timber sash and case windows. Grey slates. Stone skews with scrolled skewputts. End stacks with circular cans.

Statement of Interest

The previous building is described in the RCAHMS Inventory. Old photograph (NMRS EDD 7060) shows that this had apex stacks to wallhead dormers. Prior to Thomas Hamilton's Improvement Act scheme for the new W and S approaches, West Bow climbed steeply from the Grassmarket to the Lawnmarket. The lower section of West Bow remained, but the rest was demolished to make way for Victoria Street.
