Description

John Young, soon after 1779. 2-storey, half-sunk basement and attic, 3-bay classical former house. Droved cream sandstone ashlar with polished dressings. Architraved corniced doorpiece to right bay containing steps to deeply set door and fanlight. Pair of bowed slate-hung dormers.

3-storey 2-bay rear elevation with attached 2-storey 2-bay rubble range; garages at ground and droved relieving arch.

Timber sash and case 12-pane windows. Reduced stone stack to W; rebuilt to E; cement coped skews; grey slates.

INTERIOR: not seen 1995.

Statement of Interest

The site was feued to the builder Young in 1779, and became officially known as Young Street in 1806. Blocked central window was perhaps formerly a door to a shop. A Group with Nos 1-5 and 13-21 (odd nos) Young Street as a significant surviving part of the original fabric of Edinburgh?s New Town, one of the most important and best preserved examples of urban planning in Britain. Young Street and Hill Street contain the smartest versions of the 2-storey New Town house.
