John Young, soon after 1779. 2-storey, half-sunk basement and attic, 3-bay classical former house. Droved cream sandstone ashlar with polished dressings. Base course, eaves cornice and blocking course. To centre bay, architraved doorpiece with mutuled cornice containing steps to deeply set door and 3-pane fanlight. Left bay with tripartite windows (including basement). Later full-width slate-hung corniced dormer.
3-storey 2-bay rear elevation adjoined by 2-storey block of neighbouring church.
Timber sash and case 12-pane windows. Ashlar coped skews; stone stacks, rendered to E; grey slates.
INTERIOR: not seen 1995.
The site was feued to the builder Young in 1779, and became officially known as Young Street in 1806. This house is a mirrored pair to No 15. Listed at Category A despite the obtrusive later dormer, and A Group with Nos 1-7 and 15-21 (odd nos) Young Street, as a significant surviving part of the original fabric of Edinburgh?s New Town, one of the most important and best preserved examples of urban planning in Britain. Young Street and Hill Street contain the smartest versions of the 2-storey New Town house.
