Thomas Bonnar, 1829-34, with later additions. 4-storey and basement, 6-bay plain classical terraced tenement. Polished ashlar sandstone at principal floor; broached ashlar to floors above and basement. Base course; band course between basement and principal floor; cornice at principal floor; corniced frieze at 2nd floor; cornice and blocking course at 3rd floor. Architraved windows at 1st floor; projecting cills at 2nd floor. Ashlar steps and entrance platts oversailing basement.
NE (PRINCIPAL) ELEVATION: recessed doorpieces in bay to outer right at principal floor, with modern 2-leaf 8-pane glazed door and modern 6-pane rectangular fanlight, and 3rd bay from right at principal floor, with 4-panel, former 2-leaf timber door with radial rectangular fanlight, flanking window in penultimate bay from right at principal floor. Remainder of principal floor comprising pair of single-storey advanced near-mirrored 2-bay shop fronts, with blind returns; coped to left, corniced frieze with single decorative bracket to right. Modern plate glass windows in bays to outer left and right; recessed modern glazed doors flanking centre, with glazed returns. Regular fenestration to floors above. Basement in penultimate bay from right comprising window and 4-panel door with glazed and barred upper panels. Flagged basement area.
NW ELEVATION: adjoining terrace, see separate listing (56-60 Broughton Street).

REAR ELEVATION: not seen, 1998.
Predominantly 12-pane timber sash and case windows. Grey slate M-roof. Broached ashlar ridge stacks; coped, with circular cans.
INTERIORS: not seen, 1998; evidence of working panelled shutters.
RAILINGS: ashlar copes surmounted by cast-iron railings with spear-headed and pineapple finials.
Part of the Edinburgh New Town A Group, one of the most important and best preserved examples of urban planning in Britain. Built on a sloping site, the stepped-down blocks between and including Nos 42 and 76 Broughton Street are separated by swept-down cornices.
