Description

Probably Edward Calvert, circa 1880. 5-storey and basement with 5th storey as mansard attic, 5-bay tenement with baronial details, forming part of terrace. Squared and snecked pink sandstone with contrasting polished ashlar dressings. String courses at 1st and 4th floors; corbel table above 3rd floor stepped down to 2nd floor; gabled outer bays; stop-chamfered reveals.

N ENTRANCE elevation: roll-moulded segmental-arched doorways with recessed polished granite colonnettes and foliate capitals in 2nd and 4th bays; deep-set panelled doors; plate glass fanlights. Single windows above in 2nd bay; crowstepped dormerhead at 4th floor. Doorway in 4th bay flanked to left by simplier roll-moulded doorway with panelled door and plate glass fanlight; bipartite windows above; pedimented dormerhead to single window at 4th floor. Bipartite windows in 3rd (centre) bay; hoodmoulding at ground; pedimented dormerhead to single window at 4th floor. Full-height canted windows corbelled to square at 4th floor in bays to outer left and right; tripartite window at 4th floor with single lights to returns; dividing cornices above ground and 1st floors; tripartite dividing string courses above 2nd floor; tripartite windows at 4th floor; decorative banding in gableheads. Plate glass sash and case windows. Grey slate roof; coped wallhead stack to N with inset foliate patera and partly rendered; coped mutual stacks; stone finials; bracketted skewputts. INTERIORS: not seen 1991.

RAILINGS: decorative cast-iron railings to basement and steps up to entrances.

Probably designed for the consortium of developers, Henderson, Nisbet, Bowie, and Calvert (see Cant).
