Unveiled in 1916; replica of monument by Harry Bates ARA
in Calcutta to Field Marshal Earl Roberts, erected in
1915. Classical aedicular monument of granite, in 3 main
stages, surmounted by lifesize equestrian bronze statue
of Lord Roberts. Tall moulded plinth supports 4
Corinthian columns with canopy supporting statue base.
Recessed within columns, oblong granite slab with
dedicatory inscriptions to E and W, frieze of bronze
base-relief panels of martial scenes. To N and S seated
lifesize bronze figures of War and Victory.
Lord Roberts (1852-1914) died in France whilst visiting
troops. An extract from his speech made in Glasgow in
1913 forms part of the inscription.
