Description

John Smellie Sen. 1892-95. Long terrace of wide 3-bay, 2-storey houses. Ashlar with squared, snecked rubble side and rear elevations. Plinth, band course between storeys, cill course to 1st. Central wide entrances with wide 2-leaf doors, inner doors mostly with etched glass (No 28 with stained glass) panels.

Tripartites to left, canted balustraded window to right at ground, pattern mirrored around centre. 2 tripartites at centre with central bipartite; plate glass sashes. Deep, bracketted eaves. Slate roof; end, ridge, roof slope and wallhead covered stacks. Single storey rear gabled projections.

Low retaining front walls and stumpy battered gatepiers.

Statement of Interest

Built for John Smellie Jun., wright and builder, of Balshagray Avenue (now Balshagray Drive). A simplified version, with minor internal and external alterations, of John Burnet, Son & Campbell's 1888 terrace to the north for the same builder.
