Description

Fryers & Penman, circa 1903. 2-storey Edwardina villa in Scottish revival style with Scots Baronial and 17th century Renaissance details. Bull-faced red sandstone with ashlar dressings. Cill course; string course, ashlar mullioned windows with stop-chamfered arisses. Crowstepped dormerheads to windows breaking eaves.

N (ENTRANCE) ELEVATION: fine canted doorcase advanced to cente with cavetto and roll-moulded surround, vertically panelled door inset with small diamond-pane glazed panels, semi-circular fanlight above with small lead-paned glazing, hoodmould withe carved label stops, clustered colonnetes to angles, fine carved ashlar panel above doorway. Marble tiled vestibule, halg-glazed vestibule door, flanking sidelights. Corniced window with roll-moulded surround above doorway. Full-height semi-octagonal bay canted out from right angle, regular fenestration, balustraded parapet. Full-height canted window of 1-2-1 lights to left. Curved bay projecting E to outer left, for description see E elevation below.

E ELEVATION: curved bay to outer right, window with roll-moulded surround facing NE at 1st floor, window at ground and 1st floor to right, wallhead stack to centre. Full-height canted window to left. Bipartite window at ground to far left with bipartite dormerheaded window above. Single storey block abutting to outer left.

W ELEVATION: V-plan window projecting to centre, dormerheaded bipartite window. Full-height canted window of 1-2-1 lights to outer right.

Mostly timber sash and case windows with single pane glazing to lower sashes and 9-pane to upper, some Art Nouveau stained glass panes. Grey/gren slate roof; ashlar stacks, cast-iron rainwater goods.

INTERIOR: not seen.

GATEPIERS: red sandstone ashlar drum piers with pyramidal caps.

Statement of Interest

Now subdivided. One of ten villas designed by Fryers & penman, known as Whittingehame Gardens. Built by George hamilton. Although incorporating a number of features in common with the rest of the villas, No 7 differs from the two basic designs used for the row.
