James Boucher, architect, 1877. Italianate villa, 2 storeys, attic and basement 7-bay with advanced centre bay. Polished ashlar, stonecleaned; rusticated at ground with flat voussoirs over windows. At angles, wide rusticated pilasters to ground, paired Ionic pilasters to 1st.
Steps oversailing basement to distyle, fluted Ionic porch with carved metope frieze panels; die and baluster parapet. Round arched architraved doorpiece with double-leaf panelled door. Vestibule door tripartite with acid etched glazing. 1st floor windows architraved with consoled pediment; bays divided by Ionic pilasters. In advanced centre bay tripartite window with segmental pediment over centre light, carved tympanum; tripartite flanked by pairs of Ionic pilasters. Sash windows, plate glass glazing. Continuous fretwork frieze to cornice over ground. Continuous cill band to 1st floor, band course at eaves. Elaborate consoled cornice, die and baluster parapet with central cartouche. 4-bay flanks detailed as above; to E shallow advanced centre bay with solid parapet supporting tall corniced scrolled stack. That to W with single storey corniced entrance porch with cast-iron verandah supported on colonnettes. To left, bipartite windows detailed as above.
Rear elevation stugged ashlar; single light windows, many with leaded coloured glass. To centre of 1st floor; bow oriel with 4 round-headed lights. Single storey and basement hipped-roofed billiard room addition.
Interior: very elaborate; hall with polychrome marbled Corinthian columns, imperial stair with carved timber term newel posts and delicate cast-iron balusters. Decorative plaster cornices and ceiling work throughout. Good panelling to most rooms. Rich door cases and window surrounds. Good leaded coloured glass. Single storey and attic.
To E detached range of outbuildings in classical style. Polished ashlar; garage with pilastered reveals to vehicle entrance; bracketted pediment over.
To right; 2-bay dwelling with architraved consoled and corniced windows. Bipartite dormer breaking through eaves. Bracketted eaves with hipped slate roof.
To front of villa, ashlar balustrading to basement area; solid parapet to steps with tall cast-iron lamp brackets. Low coped ashlar wall to garden.
Opposite porch, flight of steps with solid coped ashlar parapet leads to Great Western Road from carriageway. To rear, garden terraced with flight of stone steps.
Part of Great Western Road A group. Formerly Carlston. Built for Marshall of the Saracen Foundry. Similarly elaborate Boucher interior at 22 Park Circus, Glasgow.
