David Barclay, architect; 1898-1907. 3 Ranges of similarly detailed terraced houses. 2 storeys and basement. Polished red sandstone with stugged ashlar basement; built on steeply sloping site. Mostly 2-bay elevations.
Steps oversailing basement to doorpiece with recessed pilaster reveals, double leaf panelled doors, dentilled and flat scrolled lintel detail; glazed fanlight; small sidelights with consoled cornice and simplified strapwork pediment; mostly with leaded lights with coloured art nouveau glass. To right of door, full height 4-light bow window.
Above door; bipartite window. Plate glass glazing; upper sashes of 1st floor windows multi-pane glazing.
3-bay houses at Nos 111, 119, 127 Dowanhill Street and 58 Dowanside Road with full height bows flanking doors.
No 111, with ground level basement and doorpiece. Moulded band-course at ground carried round bow windows. Overhanging timber bracketted eaves. Dormers at Nos 117, 125, 127 and 58; bowed or gabled. Corniced axial stacks, some octagonal cans. Slate roofs with tile cresting; plain skews at party walls; decorative skew-putts.
Ashlar retaining wall to steps supports cast-iron railings and ashlar piers. Low ashlar boundary/retaining wall to front gardens, with square ashlar gatepiers.
Flanks: No 127; polished red ashlar. No 91; 8-light bow window with conical slate roof to ground floor; wallhead stack. No 118 Dowanhill Street; 3-bay with full height 4-light bows flanking bipartite windows. Steeply pitched mansard slate roofs with bow dormers flanking bipartite dormer. No 60 stugged broached ashlar with square oriel to
1st floor and attics supported on stone corbels.
Rear elevation; stugged red ashlar; bipartite plate-glass windows.
Interiors: Panelled dado to main rooms and hall. Square timber columned screens to halls; all doors panelled and corniced. Good leaded glass to many vestibule and cloakroom doors.
