David Barclay, architect; 1902. End-house in terrace of
individually planned asymmetrical houses which exhibit some
similar detailing. 2 storeys; raised basement, attics.
Polished red sandstone with stugged base course. 3-bay
symmetrical E elevation; irregular S entrance elevation. E
elevation full height 4-light bow windows flank bipartite
mullioned windows at centre bay. Moulded band course over
ground floor, eaves band, timber modillion cornice.
S elevation; asymmetrical with projecting bay to left. To
right; tall flight of heavily balustraded steps oversailing
basement to platt in re-entrant angle, with later timber
porch with small pane leaded glazing. Porch gives access to
conservatory door in W wall and main doorway in S wall. Tall
cavetto moulded keystoned doorpiece extends above porch; with
tall double-leaf panelled doors. Vestibule door and fanlight
with elaborate leaded coloured glass. To right of porch, 2
small leaded lights with decorative figurative glass above
which rises tall chimney stack on bracketted cill. To left of
porch, projecting full height bay with large tripartite
window to ground (originally conservatory) with multi-pane
glazing and top-hopper windows. At 1st floor, small sash
windows. To basement, wide entrance. Continuous moulded cill
band to ground. Band course at eaves, timber cornice. Axial
and wallhead corniced stacks.
To S ornamental garden wall continues from back wall of
building. Stugged red ashlar with polished dressings; 2
arched niches flanked by Ionic pilasters linked by ashlar
balustrade.
