Description

Mid 19th century. Asymmetrical villa extensively remodelled

and with additions by J J Burnet circa 1900. 2 storeys, attic

and basement built on steeply sloping site. Stugged and

snecked ashlar with tower and turret feature to NW, steeply

pitched roof with plain barge-boarded gables; windows with

chamfered margins.

S (entrance) elevation: a symmetrical 3-bay with gabled bay

to centre. Elaborate glazed wrought-iron porch over tripartite

doorpiece with carved bands around round arched fanlight.

Leaded glazed sidelights, oak door. Single storey bow-window

to left with fish-scale slates and cast-iron brattishing

over. Otherwise windows single light.

W elevation 3-bay with tower feature to left rising to

squared parapet with turret roof to N. Bow window to right

rises from basement to ground. Bipartite window in gable. N

flank irregular with a variety of window shapes including

leaded oculus. At base of tower, twin arch arcade gives

access to kitchens at basement level.

E elevation with 2-storey addition of 1900 including billiard

room, gabled and with deep parapet. Mixed window glazing;

plate glass sashes to original windows, small pane

leaded/coloured glazing to 1900 windows.

Good interior with glazed tripartite vestibule; screen;

timber stair balusters with elaborately carved newel posts;

panelled hall with plaster frieze and dentil cornice.

Elaborate timber chimneypieces, some in art nouveau style.

Billiard room with coved plaster ceiling and elaborate Renaissance-strapwork plaster chimney-breast.

Pair of cylindrical ashlar gatepiers with conical caps and

small ball finials. Low coped ashlar wall to garden.

Statement of Interest

Interior converted to several flats but retains many original

features. 15 Kirklee Terrace known as Windsor House.

Upgraded C(S) to B 28-7-87.
