John A Campbell, 1898. Free style commercial building,
7-storey, red sandstone ashlar with polished granite base
course and entrance bay. Rusticated and roll-moulded
door surround and fanlight with wrought-ironwork at
centre of Buchanan Street front, flanked by modern shop
fronts; cornices above ground and 1st floors. 6-light
canted oriel to centre and left from 1st to 4th floors,
crowned by balustrade; elaborately pilastered and
columned, sculpted keystoned arched 5th floor window,
sculpted frieze in gable with apex aedicule. Pilaster
strips adorning tall wallhead stack to right from 2nd
floor, set above carved panel inscribed "The Dundas
House". Chamfered corner to SW by Dundas Lane, with
tripartite windows from 1st to 6th floors, with consoled
aedicule in centre light of 5th floor and carved panels
above smaller lights at 6th floor; broad eaves above dentil
cornice.
DUNDAS LANE: brick gable to left with raised gablehead
stack from 2nd floor, sadly shortened, and with windows
to right. Slighly recessed glazed brick bays to E, of 5
paired bays set in arched panels with red sandstone
lintels and tripartites under timber bracketted eaves.
Plate-glass sash and case windows to front, 4-pane to
Dundas Lane.
Formerly known as Dundas House. Built for British Workmen's
and General Assurance Company. Fashionable elevator
building, suited to narrow sites of city-scape.
