James Miller, 1923. 7-storey and basement warehouse.
Cream ashlar sandstone and steel frame. 7-bay to Hanover
Street, 5 to George Square. Ground and 1st floor forming
base for 5 above with entablature and band course
dividing. Cast bronze bands between cills and lintels
of remaining floors, embossed with swags above ground floor
and wreaths to each division above 2nd floor. Giant
doorways in centre bay to Hanover Street and outer right
bay to George Square, with Greek Key band to cornice and
inter-War classic capitals. Further doorway to Hanover
Street in outer left, with deep architrave; NE and SE angle
given greater solidity by greater use of ashlar. George
Square with architraved windows. Paired consoles to deep
eaves cornice. Mansard roof. Metal framed casement windows
with marginal glazing pattern.
Inter-War classic and steel frame construction of Lomond House were derived from such American precedents as Louis Sullivan's Wainwright Building, St Louis, 1890-91. Formerly known as MacLaren Warehouse. Redeveloped behind retained facade, 1995/96, by Glass Murray, architects, with alterations to ground floor and basement fenerstration and addition of 2 stepped attic storeys.
