David Barclay (H and D Barclay), 1901. Free Renaissance
commercial building. 5 storeys and attic, 5 bays. Polished
granite ground floor, red ashlar above. 2 shop fronts flank
round-headed central entrance. 1st-3rd floors paired windows
in each bay flanked by Doric, Ionic and Corinthian orders
respectively and Ionic above main cornice. Attached columns
and scrolled pediments to 2nd floor, round-headed windows with
swags in bracketted frieze to 3rd floor. Bays above 1st floor
divided by decorative panels or niches. Central shaped pediment
gable with semi-circular sculpted panel framed by Greek-cross
plan stacks. Flanking parapet with central aedicules supported
by scrolled consoles, (pierced with semi-circular openings).
Later storey to rear. Angle pilasters above main cornice rise
to crown finial.
RETURN ELEVATION TO WEST CAMPBELL STREET: 6 storeys, 4 bays with
windows 3-2-3-2 detailed as Bothwell Street from ground to 5th
floor. 6th floor later.
Built for Central Thread Agency to balance No 36 Bothwell
Street.
