Sir J J Burnet, 1899. Symmetrical, 4 unequal bays linked
by narrow central bay, 7-storey commercial building with
modern shops at ground floor to Hope Street. Free style.
Polished red ashlar, granite base, banded around entrance
at No 45 Hope Street with graduated keyblock; channelled
ashlar to outer bays at ground and 1st floor.
CENTRAL BAY ABOVE DOORWAY: frieze sculpted with waves
flanked by seated figures supporting aedicule with dwarf
Tuscan columns; broken pediment with sculpted winged
figure above relief panel. 3 thin pilaster strips reach to
5th floor aediculed niche and continue as one stepped
pilaster, breaking the eaves gallery; chimney stack to
raised main cornice.
OUTER BAYS: ground floor cornice breaking forward at
centre bay and forming sculpture podia. 1st floor with 4
2-light windows in architraves on cill band. 2nd floor
solid consoled balcony with bas-relief sculpture; canted
bays flank centre rising from 2nd to 4th floors,
surmounted by solid parapet/balcony, aediculed centre
light to 2nd floor canted window. All upper windows
2-light sash and case with small-paned upper sashes,
stone mullions. 5th floor with projecting cill bands on
outer bays; mutule cornice, supporting 6th floor solid
balcony. Eaves gallery with Tuscan columns; bold
modillion main cornice.
ELEVATION TO CADOGAN STREET: 4 bays ground floor cornice
raised in centre 2 bays. Giant pilaters rising to 5th
floor. Canted bays rising to 5th floor in outer bays and
to 4th in centre bays, open, broken pedimented entrance
at 1a Cadogan Street surmounted by simple aedicule and
shell headed niche. 6th floor solid balcony. Coupled
Tuscan columned eaves gallery with bold modillion
cornice. 4 2-light attic windows. Angled panelled and
corniced stack and corniced end stack.
INTERIOR: wreathed handrail, cast-iron balusters.
Staircase with bowed landings.
