James Thomson, circa 1882, substantial internal remodelling
1987/8. Classical. 5-storey and basement, 9 x 9 bay former
hotel now commercial building. 3 x 2 bay corner section
advanced. Ashlar, channelled at ground floor. Central coupled, Corinthian column portico, corniced with solid parapet
supporting segmental pedimented scroll consoled aedicule
with sculpted tympanum. Sash and case windows, mainly in
architraves. Canted bay rising from ground to 1st floor in
advanced section to St Vincent Street with elaborately
architraved windows at ground floor, column mullions at 1st
floor, independent modillion cornice, blocking course.
Ground floor windows, 6 to St Vincent Street with recessed,
fluted frieze, continued for 2 bays to Douglas Street,
remaining 7 to Douglas Street plain. 1st floor windows on cill
band, console corniced (with aprons in N Douglas Street bays).
2nd floor cill band, consoled, corniced windows, tripartite
with segmental pediment above canted bay. Lugged architraves
to 4th floor. Mansard roof to western section. 2nd bay from
N in Douglas Street blind.
