Description

Thomson and Sandilands, built c1892, single storey gate lodge. French Renaissance with Arts and Crafts details in red snecked sandstone. L-plan with entrance in re-entrant. Incorporates screen wall and gate pier.

N ELEVATION: canted bay with base course, transomed windows with half timbered gable brought out to front of bay with paired wooden bracket supports. Plain bargeboards with projecting heads of purlins. To left, screen wall dropping down in stages, 1st 2 balustraded heads with terminal ball finials, 1st one with slot detail as in boiler house and blank oculus beneath. To right of bay, screen wall to gate pier and bipartite window resting on ogee corbelled base and pediment above plain frieze, balustraded with ball finail to left. At rear of wall, stone seat in re-entrant.

GATE PIER: banded with shallow round-headed, interrupted recess, moulded cornice, blocking course with modern lamp.

W ELEVATION: doorway in re-entrant behind screen wall with stone seat, leading to flat roofed porch with bipartite, mullioned and transomed window, balustraded and ball-finialed. To right, gable with tripartite mullioned and transomed, cornice window, gable with moulded cope and round head flanked by ball finials. Prominent chimney stack on N wing of L, with corner pilasters flanking round headed blind features, plain entblature with cornice and chamfered head.
