Description

Thomson and Sandiland, c1892. Symmetrical terrace of 10, 1-2 storey cottages, Arts and Crafts style with half-timbered gables and dormer heads, snecked rubble and ashlar dressings, mullioned windows, slate roofs deep eaves to gables and dormer heads with barge boards having slightly protruding purlin ends. Broad banded stone chimeny stacks. Cast iron railings before front gardens. Brick garden wall with coal sheds to rear.

FRONT ELEVATION; 20-bays at ground comprising pairs with doorway flanked by bipartite window for each cottage. 2-storey, gabled end bays, 1st floor slightly advanced on corbels, with 3 small windows in half-timbered panel. Small cast-iron bell-shped light fixture at angle. Centre 2 bays gables as end bays with 1st floor slightly advanced on corbels, pair of bipartites in half-timbered centre panel; roof flanking has 4-light dormer, single dormer and group with further 4-light dormer flanked by single dormers flanking.

SIDE ELEVATIONS: plain 1 1/2-storey, gabled bay with single window at upper floor. Single storey brick lean-to at rear with single small window, garden wall extending to coal shed.

REAR ELEVATIONS: some alterations. Single windows at ground floor, end bays gabled as at front. Brick, semi-detached lean-to porches to centre cottages with broad 6 small-light swept dormers above. 2 single dormers to left of centre bay (2 to right removed). Brick garden wall with stone coping; coal sheds having wooden colal-hole doors (some removed), and wooden doors in rear garden wall.
