Description

Mid 19th century. Single storey and attic, 3-bay cottage. Painted stugged coursers to front, rendered and lined gables, slate roof. Bipartite windows with chamfered margins (modern out-of-character hardwood frames), chamfered doorcase to centre; corniced parapet; 2 segmental dormers (out-of-character frames); coped skews; corniced end stacks.

Statement of Interest

This house has little architectural value, but is listed for its connection with the family of David Livingstone. A plaque affixed to the house reads 'This House was the Home of Dr David Livingstone, the noted Missionary and Explorer of Africa, from 1862 until his death on 1st May 1873'. Livingstone was in Africa for a large amount of this time, and in practice the house was the home of his mother, sisters and children. Ulva is the name of the West coast island where David Livingstone's father was born.
