Description

William Leiper, 1893. Single storey, asymmetrical L-plan Scottish Baronial lodge. Snecked red sandstone rubble, ashlar dressings. Roll-moulding surround to doorpiece; stop-chamfered arrises to windows with roll-moulding; corbelled eaves; crowstepped gable to N and W.

S (ENTRANCE) ELEVATION: engaged circular tower in re-entrant angle with slightly advanced gabled and doorway with skew detailing, set on a diagonal line, semi-circular arched doorway set in squared panel, 2-leaf panelled doors, floreate panel to gablehead with blank vesica to centre; finialled conical roof to tower. Lop-sided gabled bay to right with ashlar thistle finial, window to centre and pilastered cartouche with cherubs above, set in slightly advanced corniced panel. Chamfered angle to right with window to centre. Projecting wing to left of doorpiece with small window on S elevation.

W ELEVATION: gabled bay with off-set course below gablehead; canted window to centre with ashlar saw tooth coping to roof, roll-moulded hoodmoulds to windows with carved head label stops, roll-moulded cill course.

N ELEVATION: gabled bay to outer left with apex stack, crenellated elevation to right with modern half-glazed porch abutting to right. Plate glass sash and case windows. Green slate roof, red ridge tiles, ashlar coped skews, beak skewputts, corniced sandstone stacks, original rainwater goods.

BOUNDARY WALL AND GATEPIERS: green and grey whinstone stepped rubble wall (now infilled with new concrete blocks) with red sandstone moulded coping. Red sandstone ashlar piers with corniced caps with ball finials.

Statement of Interest

See also Dalmore House and Dalmore Lodge listed separately. The canted window with carved head label stops is derived from similar decoration at Maybole Castle, Ayrshire. This lodge was built as a coachman's house and commissioned by T O Bishop.
