Description

Circa 1820 with modern (circa 1985) additions to rear. 2-storey and raised basement, 3-bay, substantial classical house sitting proud of its surroundings. Pink ashlar front, brown rubble stone to sides and rear, ashlar dressings, eaves cornice, pedimented frontage, pilaster ends.

E (PRINCIPAL) ELEVATION: centre bay advanced, later 8-step ashlar flight windows to sides, leading to entrance. Replacement doors with rectangular fanlight in architraved ashlar frame recessed in pilastered surround beneath porch, Roman Doric, plain architrave, mutules and pediments. Bipartite window above, stone mullion, moulded margins, consoles and cornice above head. Pediment above. Bays flanking with openings in basement, large windows to principal floor with moulded margins and cornice above heads, windows at 1st floor with moulded margins. Additional wing to right at ground floor (see N Elevation).

S ELEVATION: projecting small, square, flat-roofed porch to centre at basement level, stone mullioned bipartites and shallow pedimented wallheads to S and E faces, later door to W face. Window to principal floor above.

W ELEVATION: extensive additions at basement and principal floors (see Notes). Centre bay advanced, window to principal floor, larger window at 1st floor, bays flanking with large windows to principal floor, windows above at 1st floor.

N ELEVATION: additional asymmetrical wing at ground level obscuring basement principal floors. Buff sandstone ashlar with window to E face, squared and snecked brown rubble stone to sides and rear, bay to left with window, bay to centre advanced with small window bay to right attached to recent extensive additions (see Notes). Window at 1st floor of original house 6-pane timber sash and case windows, grey slate, piended roofs, ashlar ridge stacks with cornices to N, S and E.

INTERIOR: decorative plasterwork in entrance hall, vaulted ceiling, patera at intersection of 4 ribs, varied enrichments to ribs and cornice. Architraved and corniced doorpieces within hall.

Statement of Interest

Converted for use as sheltered housing circa 1985, with U-plan single storey dwellings filling garden to W and N, and built against and connecting with the house.
