Description

Early to earlier 19th century with later alterations. 2-storey and attic, symmetrical house with crowstepped gables and lean-to projection to left (E), abutting Number 14 (listed separately) to right (W); rectangular-plan garden to W. Harled. Cement window cills.

N (PRINCIPAL) ELEVATION: deep-set, part-glazed door with letterbox fanlight at ground in bay to centre; window at 1st floor above. Window at each floor in bays flanking. Boarded door to lean-to projection to outer left.

E (SIDE) ELEVATION: lean-to projection spanning bays at ground; attic window, set to right of gable; gablehead stack above.

2-pane timber sash and case windows; 12-pane timber sash and case attic window to W. Traditional graded stone slated roof; stone ridge; harled, corniced gablehead stack to E and W; uPVC rainwater goods.

INTERIOR: not seen, 1998.

BOUNDARY WALLS: high rubble walls with rubble cope enclosing rectangular-plan garden to E.

Statement of Interest

A building which has retained its original layout and also its traditional stone slated roof. This part of Kirkwall was developed in the 18th century, continuing the town westward. The proportion of the house and the size and spacing of the openings suggest that this building was constructed in the early part of the 19th century.
