James Playfair 1786-8. Rectangular plan, red rough ashlar,
2-storey treatment, arched windows at upper level with
original glazing: 7 windows down flank; end bays advanced;
5-windows w. gable, end bays advanced, 2-stage clock tower
and octagonal spire of very simple form. Slated. Interesting
galleried interior of slim superimposed doric orders;
segmental ceiling. Reseated John Carver 1873, further
alterations later; hall added 1904.
B group.
The central area of Kirriemuir still substantially retains
the warm red sandstone character of the period of Sir J.M.
Barrie's novels. Most of the shop fronts are either original
or mid-Victorian. Only the Parish Church and the British
Linen Bank are of high architectural interest in the academic
sense. The remainder is well-proportioned provincial Georgian
vernacular with a few Victorian replacements. But the
internal grouping and spaces have much character and
atmosphere while the outward grouping on a high bank in the
bend of the Gairie Burn is picturesque. A fair number of
items are included for group value only, i.e. unity of
character and material.
Ecclesiastical building in use as such.
