Description

C & L Ower, architects of 1885 town hall; 1913 library
addition to west by Leslie Ower & Allen; in roughly L-plan
arrangement: all set back from street behind ashlar-coped
and iron-railed boundary walls, steps up to doors.
Renaissance details. Harled, with ashlar dressings: most
windows with small-paned upper sashes: slate roofs.
TOWN HALL: 2 storeys; wide curvilinear gable with crowning
pediment, central door with consoled balcony over; tripartite
above and arched window at attic level: recessed narrow
flanking bays, modern stack abuts east flank.
LIBRARY: single storey with attics; advanced/recessed bays;
pedimented door towards east and wall-head dormers; inner bay
shallow advanced with round-headed lights; conical-roofed
turret at south-west angle.
