Description

18th century. 2-storey and attic tenement with 2-bay gable to Commercial Street. Harled walls, harl-pointed rubble S elevation. Projecting cills at windows.

N (COMMERCIAL STREET) ELEVATION: modern shopfront at ground, regular fenestration at floors above except for blank at attic in bay at left. Large gablehead stack.

E ELEVATION: blank elevation except for windows flanking centre at 1st floor (window at right infilled); margined corner at right.

W ELEVATION: cement rendered and lined at right with modern addition projecting at 1st floor; margined corner at left.

Timber sash and case windows, plate glass at 1st floor, 4-pane at attic. Purple-grey slate roof, harled apex stack, cement-rendered skew copes with corbelled skewputts.

Statement of Interest

With its similarly gabled neighbours, this building makes a forceful contribution to the streetscape, demonstrating the traditional gable-to-street pattern of this area. It would benefit from re-instatement of a more traditional shopfront.
