Description

A late 18^th and early 19^th century double-pile terraced house, currently in use as a nursery (2026). It has an irregular four-bay front with a low ground floor and three enlarged bay windows to the first floor, partly raised above eaves and carried on corbels. Two are three-light canted bays and that to the centre is a squared bipartite with a timber-framed gabled above. Off-centre door in a plain doric architrave, with small flanking windows with brackets, supporting bay windows above. Walls are rendered with painted dressings. M-profile slate roof with straight skews and rendered and painted end chimneystacks. Internally linked to single-storey addition to southeast gable.

Statement of Interest

Ivy House meets the criteria for listing for the following reasons:

• The building is a distinctive example of an early 19^th century redevelopment of an earlier traditional house that retains its historic character, particularly to the front elevation.
• The building is well-detailed and shows features of definite architectural quality, including the corbelling, the bay windows and the treatment of the window and door surrounds.
• The building has been extended to the southeast but it retains a good degree of authenticity in its surviving exterior form. Its historic character has not been adversely affected by later alterations.
• Its setting is largely intact and forms part of an architecturally and historically significant group of other listed buildings along Moffat High Street, which are largely of a similar date.
• It is not a rare or early example of its building type but its design quality and level of detailing is notable for domestic buildings of this date and type within the region.
