Description

1876. 2-storey, rectangular plan simple Italianate building with minor additions. Squared and snecked rubble with ashlar dressings, raised cills, base and band courses.

W (front) elevation: symmetrical, 3-bay advanced at centre, breaking eaves. Thomsonesque doorpiece, arched bipartite above, bell-cote with slated pyramidal roof on voussoired arches at centre. Tripartites in outer bays with roll-moulded lintels and simply moulded architrave to ground floor lights.

SIDE ELEVATIONS: S side with 3 bays and door in deeply recessed centre bay; detailed mainly as front, and with ugly porch addition to E end. N side simple; rear addition in sympathy with scale and design. Variety of lying-pane and small-pane glazing. Slate roof; leaded flashings. Ashlar stacks.

Statement of Interest

Built as Burgh School, by Peter Whitecross and Sons. Headmasters house to N in similar style. Replaced 1894 by High School, Law Road.
