John Hutchison, architect. Dated 1874. Extended 1892 by
Hutchison. Modern extensions and alterations. Mixed round
arch style. 2 storey and attic L-plan villa. Stugged ashlar
with polished dressings, including long and short angle
quoins, on channelled base course.
Asymmetrical east front of 3 wide gabled bays, that at left
advanced; and 1 narrow bay between centre and right gables.
Single storey porch with round-headed arches flanked by
pilasters, projects from centre; approached by steps with
cast-iron lamp standards. Convex quadrant with hood
moulded sash window connects it to left advanced bay.
Balustrade over. Advanced single storey 6-light window
to left bay and canted window to right bay similarly
balustraded; round-headed window with Renaissance tracery
in narrow bay. 1st floor windows all round-headed tripartite
to left bay, bipartites to centre and right (latter with
moulded over arch and sculpted head to tympanum). Oculi to
left and right gables. North elevation: advanced gabled
bay at right with 2 storey, 5-light bow window, straight
headed lights to ground, round to 1st with bracketted eaves
and slate roof; to left corbelled stack raised through
eaves. Single storey and attic offices at rear; modern
additions, rear and south. Wide eaves to all parts, slate
roofs. Fine interiors including porch with mosaics,
stained glass and marbel to hall former billard room to
1st floor south bay. Fine plaster ceilings and mouldings
to chief rooms.
In grounds single storey coach house with 2-storey
cottage attached by Hutchison.
Some of original movable furnishings survive.
