J D Cairns dated 1914. 2-storey and basement free style villa. Squared snecked and stugged red sandstone with irregular long and short polished cream ashlar dressings. Rounded arrises; overhanging timber eaves.
W (ENTRANCE) ELEVATION: main 2-storey block with projecting ashlar porch at centre; bolection moulded doorway with 2-leaf panelled doors; thistle and date 1914 above. Window to immediate right; 3 grouped windows above at 1st floor, breaking eaves with plain gable. Window to right at ground floor; at corner, corbelled ashlar turret at 1st floor with pair of windows, breaking eaves with bellcast lead roof and finial. To left, tall stair window and small window (basement stair/cupboard?). To far left, single storey range with pair of windows.
S ELEVATION: blank with turret to left and wallhead stack, shouldered to right. Sundial below corbelling, wall-mounted with copper gnomon.
E (GARDEN) ELEVATION: main 2-storey 2-bay block. Canted ashlar windows to each bay; that to left single storey with coped parapet, at 1st floor bipartite window breaking eaves with gabled dormerhead; that to right 2-storey breaking eaves. Set back range to right with basement entrance and closet above in re-entrant angle; ground floor window and wallhead 1st floor/attic window.
N ELEVATION: projecting ground floor and basement range with door and
3 windows at ground; basement window to left.
Timber sash and case 12-pane windows. Piended roofs; grey slates.
INTERIOR: not seen 1994.
GARAGE: to N. Brick with ashlar framing to front; boarded double doors, each with 3-pane window. Piended roof.
GATEPIERS, GATES, BOUNDARY WALL AND SUNDIAL: stugged red sandstone drum gatepiers with domed caps; wrought-iron gates. Stone and brick boundary wall (adjoining garage to N). Pedestal sundial in garden; polygonal base, carved baluster-shaft and corniced square table-dial with gnomon.
Apparently built by an architect for himself. The garden layout survives with fine yew hedge to rear surrounding paved rock garden; circular yew bay on axis with sundial at centre and 4 openings. Timber summerhouse to SW.
