Description

Alexander Dickson, 1862-63 for Walter Richard, typefounder. Large 2-storey and attic 3-bay villa with extended service range to rear (now separate houses).

Principal House: dressed cream sandstone with ashlar dressings.

E elevation: symmetrical 3-bay. Steps to heavy pilastered and corniced doorpiece at centre; deep-set glazed and panelled door and rectangular plate glass fanlight. Depressed arched window with keystone at 1st floor. Flanking bays with slightly advanced 2-storey corniced canted windows; panelled aprons at ground; decorative cast-iron balconies at 1st floor; pierced ashlar parapets; broad gableheads at attic with round-headed bipartite windows and ball finials (central mullion removed to right).

N elevation: irregular 4-bay. 2 left bays slightly advanced and gabled with lean-to addition at ground; left windows blind; apex stack. 2 right bays with gabled wallhead stack at centre and dormer to left.

S elevation: 5 compact bays. 2 right bays slightly advanced and gabled with cast-iron balconies at 1st floor windows; round-headed bipartite attic window; apex stack. Remaining bays with 2-storey canted window at centre; cast-iron balcony at 1st floor; piend and platform roof; narrow window to each floor to right; door to left. 2 box dormers. Middle House attached to W.

W elevation: largely obscured; 3-bay with outer bays gabled, apex stacks.

Timber sash and case windows, plate glass and 4-pane.

Middle House and Cottage: Whinstone with cream sandstone dressings; chamfered arrises.

Middle House: single storey 4-bay link between Hall and Cottage; glazed door with 3-pane rectangular fanlight and timber canopy to inner left bay; left bay with bipartite window.

N elevation: to right, lower advanced 2-bay block with single storey link in re-entrant angle; later glazed porch at ground; 1st floor windows breaking eaves with gabled dormerheads; projecting gabled stack at centre. Gabled whinstone return to W with windows at centre.

12-pane timber sash and case windows (uPVC to bipartite).

Cottage: 2-storey; adjoined at right angles to Middle House.

W elevation: 3-bay; gabled centre bay slightly advanced with door offset to left and closet window to right; blind bipartite window above; flanking bays with blind windows to each floor.

Return elevations gabled with windows to both floors. Stair turret with pepperpot roof to rear.

Modern windows.

Corniced ashlar stacks with octagonal cans. Ashlar coped skews; corbel skewputts. Purple-grey slates.

Interiors: unseen 1994.
