Description

1878. 2-storey and basement office building with shops at ground and workshop in basement. Stugged coursed cream sandstone ashlar with polished dressings to primary elevations; rubble to secondary elevations. Raised margins.

E ELEVATION: 4-bay with further angled bay to right. Modern harled 3-bay shopfront at ground with opening at centre leading to doors (2 shops), flanked by large plate glass windows and further window in angled bay. At 1st floor, broad left bay framed by channelled pilasters with entablature and blocking course; bipartite window; tall pavilion roof with fish scale slates and elaborate cast-iron cresting (see S elevation). Window to each bay to right, unified by single gable (turning angle) with framed date panel in gablehead AD 1878.

S ELEVATION: 4 bays on raised basement. 7 blocked windows to basement with segmental-headed lintels. Right bay framed by pilasters and cornice at ground with blind pedimented panel, and channelled pilasters, entablature and blocking course at 1st floor with window with shaped apron (see above for roof). 3 left bays with pair of partly blocked windows at ground, with arched lintels, and 3 windows at 1st floor; long and short quoins to left, cornice and blocking course.

N ELEVATION: to left, single bay corresponding to E elevation with shop window at ground and window at 1st floor. 3 bays to right; blank with small basement window to left, windows to both floors at centre, modern door and window at 1st floor to right.

W ELEVATION: 2 broad bays on raised basement. Windows to both principal floors; door to basement store to right.

Timber sash and case 6-pane windows; 4-pane upper sashes to S, 4-pane lower sashes to remaining elevations. Piended and pitched roofs; grey slates (see above); ashlar coped skews; corbel skewputt.

INTERIOR: not seen 1994.

Statement of Interest

Bridge House is on prominent site adjoining the Cuddy Bridge. It was fairly recently shorn of its original shopfronts.
