Description

1825-8, repaired and restored, 1884. Rubble and concrete with concrete sea wall raised at N (seaward) face. Rectangular basin with entry in S. Wide W arm of harbour projects slightly into bay to shelter harbour entry.

Statement of Interest

The New Harbour was built and financed by the Earl of Seafield in 1825-8 only to be virtually destroyed by storm in January 1839. Channel cleared and harbour reconstructed in concrete in 1884 at a cost of ?12,000.
