Description

Peter Paul Pugin (Pugin & Pugin) 1883. Late Gothic, red
coursed rubble in alternately broad and narrow courses with
ashlar dressings, 7-bay nave with semi-octagonal SW
baptistery and diagonally set stair to gallery at NW, W front
3 tall 2-light windows, aisled for 6 bays, 3-light windows
aisles and clerstory, 2-bay chancel with side chancel,
aisleless canted apse, clerestory windows with circled
tracery. Detached chimney feature at SW. Interior has 6-bay
arcades, circular piers corbelled to octagonal, hoodmoulds of
arches die into angel corbels carrying wall shafts to waggon
roof, aisle roofs carried on 1/2 transverse arches. Large and
elaborate original high altarpiece and altarpieces in side
chapels much above Pugin & Pugin average, traceried red
marble septum; elaborate coloured marble font and bold modern
glass in baptistery.
