Description

Circa 1870, single storey 11-bay school; all tooled rubble with tooled and polished ashlar dressings. Slightly advanced gabled centre bay; advanced gabled outer bays with entrances in re-entrant angles, to left in square projecting tower with pyramidal bellcast fishscale slate roof, and to right in similar square porch rising as octagonal 1st stage with diminutive hoodmoulded windows in alternate facets, and with steep octagonal bellcast roof. Large hoodmoulded tripartites in advanced outer bays; mainly 10-pane glazing; corniced ridge stacks; slate roofs. Low coped retaining wall with cast iron railing to Castle Street; simple coped rubble wall to East Church Street.

Statement of Interest

Corner site with East Church Street and George Street. Former Free Church School. Appears on 1st edition OS 1872. School now serves as annexe to Thurso Technical College.
