Circa 1859. Single storey with attic, 3-bay plain classical cottage with single storey, 2-bay piend-roofed pavilion recessed to outer right (No 125A). Squared and coursed cream rubble sandstone; painted margins; painted render to pavilion. Raised base course; lintel course beneath corniced eaves; painted blocking course. Narrow strip quoins; projecting cills; pilastered doorpiece.
SE (ENTRANCE) ELEVATION: timber panelled door centred at ground; plate glass fanlight; surrounding doorpiece comprising flanking pilasters, plain frieze, cornice, block pediment. Single windows in bays flanking entrance; box dormers aligned above. Modern door and single window in pavilion recessed to outer right.
Replacement glazing throughout. Grey slate roof; raised skews; replacement rainwater goods. Coped apex stacks; octagonal cans.
INTERIOR: not seen 1997.
BOUNDARY WALL AND PIERS: low coped random rubble wall enclosing site; cast-iron railings; timber pedestrian entry gate at centre; painted square-plan piers to outer left and right, pyramidal caps.
Forms a near-pair with the adjacent, earlier cottage - now Nos 127, 129 & 131 Portland Street (see separate list entry). Despite the extensive loss of original glazing and the additional box-dormers, the cottage retains a degree of architectural interest. Of particular note are the long, low proportions and classical details including the fine pilastered doorpiece, deep cornice, strip quoins and corniced stacks. The original list description refers to this property as No 129 Portland Street, and groups it together with the adjacent No 131. The numbers have since changed, with this property now referred to as Nos 125 & 125A and the adjoining cottage as Nos 127, 129 and 131. The two listings have now been split (1997).
