Description

Mid to later 19th century. Symmetrical 2-storey with attic, 3-bay plain classical house with 2-storey, single bay wings recessed to outer left and right. Painted coursed and stugged sandstone; painted dressings. Raised base course; eaves course beneath corniced eaves; blocking course. Narrow strip quoins; architraved window surrounds; bracketed cills to central block; pilastered entrance.

NE (SOUTH BEACH) ELEVATION: timber panelled door centred at ground; opaque-glazed tripartite fanlight; surrounding doorpiece comprising flanking pilasters, plain frieze, cornice; single window aligned at 1st floor; 3-light canted dormer above. Regularly fenestrated at both floors in remaining bays to left and right.

SW (ESPLANADE) ELEVATION: small opening at ground off-set to right of centre; stair window centred above. 3-light canted windows at both floors in flanking bays; 3-light canted dormers above. Single door set in lean-to addition at ground in bay to outer left; single window aligned above. Single windows at both floors in bay to outer right.

12-pane lying-pane timber sash and case glazing to South Beach (louvred-upper to left of entrance); predominantly 4-pane timber sash and case glazing at rear (8-pane lying-panes to outer wings at 1st floor). Grey slate roof; raised skews; replacement rainwater goods. Coped apex stacks to NW and SE; octagonal cans.

INTERIOR: not seen 1997.

BOUNDARY WALLS: low coped rubble wall to South Beach; timber pedestrian entry gate; taller, random rubble wall enclosing site at rear.

Statement of Interest

A prominently sited seafront villa. Features to note include the lying-pane sashes, bracketed cills, pilastered entrance and corniced eaves. Note also, the overall symmetry.
