Description

Probably 18th century, repaired in 19th century. Stone shaft 10' high, 18" in diameter, (formerly painted) with entasis, set on simple square base, band 2-thirds up and neck ring; crowned by much-weathered square block sundial with dials to each face, worn Roamn numerals gnomons missing. MOulded hemispherical finial (Top damaged, 1991).

Statement of Interest

Apparently the old market cross was sited originally in front of the old court house and was moved in the 19th century; after The Square was created between North and South Main Streets, it was stored for a while in the jail. When it returned to view in 19th century, it was first placed to the west of the new market cross (listed separately above), but was latterly moved to its east side.
