McWhannel & Rogerson, 1892-4. Group of 16 semi-detached single storey and attic workers cottages of 2 designs, built in close screened from main road by high walls and entered through gateway with gatepiers and pedestrian gate. Squared and snecked cream rock-faced sandstone with contrasting red sandstone dressings. Timber sash and case windows with 8-pane upper sash, plate glass to lower sash glazing pattern.
2 compositions used alternately on each side of street:
NOS. 1&3. 2&4, 9&11, 10&12: semi-detached pairs of 2-bay cottages, timber boarded doors to centre, single windows to outer bays at ground floor. 2 small windows grouped to centre at 1st floor, small bipartites to outer bays breaking eaves in stone, gabled dormerheads.
NOS: 5&7, 6&8, 14&16, 13&15: semi-detached pairs of 2-bay cottages, timber boarded doors to centre, bipartites to outer bays, 2 small windows grouped to centre at attic floor, breaking eaves in single catslide dormer, windows to outer bays breaking eaves in red sandstone dormerheads, pointed-arched pediments with blank, raised panel to tympanum.
Single window to each gable at 1st floor rear.
All cottages have grey-green slates, red ridge tiles, ashlar coped skews and skewputts, ashlar coped stacks with simple cans. Low, red sandstone coped GARDEN WALL to each property, stepped to street gradient, some original cast and wrought-iron gates in Arts & Crafts style.
Ashlar coped rubble SCREEN WALL to main road, with tall ashlar square gatepiers surmounted by ball-finials. Flat-arched pedestrian gateway to N.
The two modern cottages at the foot of the close are not included in the listing.
