Description

1792-4; subsequent alterations. 3-storey and attic 8-bay classical tenement built out at ground. Droved sandstone ashlar. Bays irregularly spaced. Lugged and pedimented doorway to centre right bay flanked by 1 shop to S and 2 to N. Eaves cornice; pair of tripartite piend-roofed dormers to left, 1 to right.

Plate glass timber sash and case windows; 12-pane to stair and 2nd floor left. Ashlar coped skews; stone stacks - rebuilt to N, partly rendered at centre; grey slates.

INTERIOR: much altered and divided, but with possible surviving features.

Statement of Interest

Probably originally contained a main door flat to left with flats above and basement, ground and 1st floor house to right, with flat over. A Group with Nos 21-33 (odd nos) Castle Street as a significant surviving part of the original fabric of Edinburgh?s New Town, one of the most important and best preserved examples of urban planning in Britain.
