Description

Circa 1780; refronted mid 19th century, later alterations at ground. 4-storey 3-bay terraced former classical house. Cream sandstone ashlar. Projecting shopfront at ground with consoled cornice and solid parapet; modern plate glass shopfront. 1st and 2nd floors with canted bay at centre (mouldings reduced) flanked by windows with lugged architraves. Modillioned cornice with balustraded parapet.

Timber casement windows (sash and case to 3rd floor). Flagpole at 1st floor; grey slates.

INTERIOR: largely modernised for commercial use.

Statement of Interest

Cornice and parapet echo that of the bank next door (see separate listing). Listed at Category B as a significant surviving part of the original fabric of Edinburgh?s New Town, one of the most important and best preserved examples of urban planning in Britain.
