Description

Circa 1785; later alterations at ground. Pair of 3-storey and attic, 3-bay former classical houses. Droved and broached cream sandstone ashlar. Long and short quoins; eaves cornice. Ground floor built out as shop to No 111, incorporating access to upper floors; at No 113 neo-Georgian reinstatement with corniced architraved door to left by Covell Matthews, 1978-80. Each house with pair of large 20th century piend-roofed canted dormers.

Timber sash and case windows; plate glass to No 111, 12-pane to No 113. Ashlar coped skews (including at centre); stone stacks, rendered to E; grey slates.

INTERIOR: linked with No 115 (see separate listing).

RAILINGS: modern replacement cast-iron railings.

A Group with Nos 109-115 (odd nos) George Street as a significant surviving part of the original fabric of Edinburgh?s New Town, one of the most important and best preserved examples of urban planning in Britain.
