Description

Early 19th century; recast and converted by Ian Lindsay & Partners, circa 1970. 3-storey, 4-bay tenement forming W end of Main Street and Pier Place. Semi-elliptical, 3-window bow end with apex stack to W and blind window to centre. Continuous stugged base course; raised and painted string course. Stugged grey sandstone to ground floor; harling and limewash to remaining floors. Raised and painted surrounds to openings. Harled and limewashed to Pier Place.

S (ENTRANCE) FACADE: 4-bay to Main Street. Timber boarded door to entry in bay to right of centre; 3-light fanlight above; single windows in remaining bays. Single windows to 1st and 2nd floors in bays to centre, right and left; blank bay to outer left.

W (BOW) ELEVATION: 3 single windows to ground floor; single windows to both floors aligned above in bays to outer left and right. Blind window to 2nd floor in central bay.

N (REAR) ELEVATION: 3-storey, 3-bay. Regularly fenestrated to all floors.

12-pane timber sash and case windows to all openings. Grey slate roof; harled wallhead stack to E; harled, stepped and coped gablehead stack to W with precast concrete copes and circular cans.

Statement of Interest

Former Marine Hotel with No 60 Main Street. Previously stuccoed with timber architraves. One of many Newhaven properties refurbished by

Ian Lindsay & Partners during the 1970s, the building displays characteristics typical to all - harled and limewashed facades and timber sash and case windows. Despite harsh detailing and standardisation, work here must be acknowledged as a pioneering attempt to conserve and improve an entire fishing village. A substantial project with a clear philosophy, it contrasts with more recent restoration attempts and thus, illustrates the differing and developing attitudes towards conservation. Previously listed as 1 and 2 Main Street.
