Early 19th century. 2-storey, 7-bay pair of reorientated classical houses with bow ends to E and W; shop built out to W. Adjoins No 212 - 214 at right angles. Coursed rubble sandstone to N, E and W; rubble to S; heavily pointed.
S ELEVATION: Roman Doric pilastered doorpiece to re-entrant angle (possibly relocated from N elevation) comprising rosette motifs in die blocks; projecting cornice. Timber door; plate glass fanlight above; single window to right.
W ELEVATION: late 19th century flat-roofed shop advanced at ground;
2 single windows flanking bow above.
N ELEVATION 216 AND 218: 3-bay; ground floor openings blocked; 1st floor window in bay to outer right blinded; single windows in remaining bays to centre and outer left. 55 HAWTHORNVALE: 4-bay. Droved quoins; droved long and short surrounds to windows. Entrance blocked; blinded windows to ground in bays to right and outer left; blinded window to 1st floor above; single windows to both floors in remaining bays.
E (REAR) ELEVATION: 2-storey, single bay bow; coursed rubble sandstone; droved long and short quoins; stugged and polished surrounds to windows. Projecting cornice. Single windows to ground and 1st floors.
2-pane timber sash and case windows to W elevation; 4-pane sash and case window to N elevation in penultimate bay to right at 1st floor; 12-pane sash and case timber windows to remaining openings. Swept piended grey slate roof; coped stone stack.
INTERIORS: not seen 1996.
BOUNDARY WALL: rubble wall to rear of No 55 with droved coping. Droved long and short stone surround to pedestrian gateway; stone entablature; projecting cornice; timber gates to vehicular access.
